Everything You Need to Know
Crypto exchange development requires specialized expertise in three areas: matching engine (Go, concurrent systems), wallet infrastructure (HSM/MPC, blockchain monitoring), and compliance integration.
The Exchange Engineering Team Structure
A production crypto exchange requires a team, not a single developer:
Matching Engine Engineer (Go):
Concurrent systems expertise, race condition prevention, financial arithmetic (decimal precision), order book data structures. Rare skill — the number of engineers who have built production matching engines is small.
Wallet Infrastructure Engineer (Go/Python):
HSM integration, blockchain RPC, multi-chain address derivation, transaction construction and broadcasting for every supported blockchain. Must understand the transaction format of every chain (very different between EVM, Bitcoin, and Solana).
Compliance Engineer:
KYC provider integration (Jumio, Persona), AML analytics integration (Chainalysis, Elliptic), SAR filing workflow, regulatory reporting automation. Part developer, part compliance specialist.
API Engineer:
REST and WebSocket API design, rate limiting, authentication (HMAC, JWT), API key management. Exchange API must be production-grade — poorly designed APIs are exploited.
The Make vs Buy Decision
Building a full exchange team in-house requires: 8–12 engineers, 12–18 months to production, $2M–$5M in year-1 engineering cost. Engaging a specialized firm: 22–38 weeks to production, $280,000–$680,000. Most new exchanges engage a specialized firm for the initial build, then hire 2–4 engineers for ongoing maintenance.
