Blockchain Project Scope Document Template

Define What You Are Building Before You Build It — A scope document answers one question: what specifically are we building, and what are we not building? It prevents the most expensive blockchain project mistake: building the wrong thing.

Practical

Assumptions built for real project planning.

Fast

Get working estimates without spreadsheet setup.

Decision Ready

Use outputs in scoping and budget reviews.

Resource Notes

Use, understand, and apply the model

A blockchain scope document defines the project with explicit sections: System Overview (what does it do in one paragraph), Smart Contract Scope (every contract and function), Front-End Scope (every screen and user action), Integration Scope (every system that must connect), Explicitly Out of Scope (what is NOT being built), Acceptance Criteria (how you know it's done), and Change Request Process. The out-of-scope section is as important as what IS in scope.

BLOCKCHAIN PROJECT SCOPE DOCUMENT

PART 1: SYSTEM OVERVIEW

In one paragraph, describe what this system does: [Example: 'A Hyperledger Fabric network connecting 6 pharmaceutical distributors and 4 pharmacy chains that records lot-level custody transfer events and enables DSCSA-compliant traceability queries responding in under 500ms.']

PART 2: SMART CONTRACT SCOPE

PART 3: FRONT-END SCOPE

  • Web application
  • iOS app
  • Android app
  • Admin dashboard
  • API only (no front-end)

PART 4: INTEGRATION SCOPE

PART 5: EXPLICITLY OUT OF SCOPE

This section is as important as what IS in scope. List everything that will not be built in this engagement.

  • [Item 1: e.g., 'Mobile apps — web only in this phase']
  • [Item 2: e.g., 'Historical data migration — blockchain records begin at go-live']
