Practical Takeaway

Layer 2 ecosystems, protocol DAOs, and Web3 foundations collectively distribute $500M+ annually in grants for builders. Here is where to apply and how to structure winning grant proposals.

Full Resource

Active grant programs include Arbitrum DAO Grants ($5K–$2M), Optimism RPGF ($30M–$100M retroactive), Ethereum Foundation grants (public goods), Web3 Foundation (Substrate/Polkadot, $10K–$500K), and Polygon Village. Winning proposals require: clear problem statement, ecosystem fit justification, detailed roadmap with milestones, and budget breakdown.

Active Grant Programs (2025)

Arbitrum DAO Grants:

Grant amounts: $5,000–$2,000,000 depending on program track. Application via Arbitrum DAO Snapshot and Tally governance. Funded categories: DeFi infrastructure, developer tooling, gaming, and Arbitrum ecosystem growth. Website: arbitrum.foundation/grants

Optimism RPGF (Retroactive Public Goods Funding):

Mechanism: token holders vote to retroactively fund projects that provided value to the ecosystem. Not a traditional grant — you build first, prove value, then receive retroactive reward. Past rounds: $30M–$100M distributed. Website: app.optimism.io/retropgf

Ethereum Foundation (EF):

Small-to-medium grants for Ethereum ecosystem development. Strong preference for public goods (infrastructure, research, open-source tooling). Not commercial DeFi. Website: ethereum.org/en/community/grants/

Web3 Foundation (Polkadot/Substrate):

Grants for Substrate/Polkadot ecosystem development. Three tiers: $10K–$30K (small), $30K–$100K (medium), $100K–$500K (large). Website: web3.foundation/grants/

Polygon Village:

Grants for Polygon ecosystem builders. DeFi, gaming, NFT, enterprise applications. Website: polygon.technology/village

Winning Grant Proposal Structure

1. PROJECT SUMMARY (2 sentences): 'We are building [X] for [Y use case] on [Network]. This will [specific measurable impact] for [specific audience].'

2. PROBLEM STATEMENT (1 paragraph): What specific problem exists? Who does it affect? Why haven't existing solutions solved it?

3. SOLUTION DESCRIPTION (2-3 paragraphs): What exactly are you building? How does it solve the problem? How is it better than existing alternatives?
