Everything You Need to Know

A production DeFi protocol requires at minimum: a protocol economist, a senior Solidity engineer, an auditor, and a front-end engineer.

The Full DeFi Protocol Team

Protocol economist / tokenomics designer:

Quantitative modeling of token emission, sink mechanisms, liquidity dynamics, and market stress scenarios. Required before development begins. Rate: $200–$400/hr. In most teams, this is a consulting engagement — not a full-time hire.

Senior Solidity protocol engineer:

DeFi-specific Solidity: AMM math, lending Interest Rate Models, liquidation engine design, oracle integration, flash loan resistance. Rate: $200–$350/hr. The lead engineer for a DeFi protocol must be senior — this is not a role where a mid-level developer with supervision is adequate.

Protocol security researcher (auditor):

Independent review of the protocol's code and economic attack surface. Must not be the developer. Typically a firm engagement ($30,000–$80,000 per audit). Not a full-time hire — an engagement at audit time, and at each upgrade cycle.

The Minimum Viable DeFi Team

For a focused single-protocol launch (one AMM pool or one lending market): 1 senior Solidity engineer (12–20 weeks), 1 front-end engineer (8–12 weeks), and 1 external audit engagement. Total: $120,000–$260,000. This is the minimum for a protocol that can pass an independent audit, attract institutional liquidity, and survive its first market stress event.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About Hiring

Can a solo developer build and launch a DeFi protocol?+

Technically yes — and many do. The DeFi loss catalog ($6B+ since 2020) is disproportionately filled with solo-built, unaudited protocols. The correct answer is: a solo developer can write the code, but cannot provide the independent security review that production DeFi requires. Plan for external audit from the start.
