Everything You Need to Know
Security token development spans Solidity (transfer-restricted ERC-20 or ERC-3643), back-end (KYC/AML integration), and investor platform (subscription workflow, cap table, distribution).
What Makes Security Token Development Specialized
Transfer restrictions:
Every security token transfer must verify that both sender and receiver are whitelisted (verified accredited investors). This is not optional — it is the compliance mechanism that allows the token to exist as an unregistered security under Regulation D. Getting this wrong exposes the issuer to securities law liability.
ERC-3643 (T-REX standard):
The emerging institutional standard for security tokens with on-chain identity registries (ONCHAINID). More complex than simple whitelist ERC-20 but provides better secondary market interoperability.
ATS integration:
For secondary market trading, integration with a FINRA-registered ATS (tZERO, Texture Capital, INX). Each ATS has its own API and transfer agent requirements.
Distribution automation:
USDC distribution to hundreds or thousands of token holders in a single smart contract call. The developer must understand the gas optimization required for large batch distributions.
The Parallel Requirements
Security token development has three parallel workstreams that must coordinate: legal (securities counsel writing the offering documents), technical (smart contract + investor platform), and business (investor relations, offering marketing). All three must be complete before the first investor can onboard.
